Large-Leaved Lupin (Lupinus polyphyllus) is a robust, herbaceous perennial known for its dramatic foliage and tall, densely packed flower spikes that bring bold structure and colour to the garden.
Its name comes from the distinctive, broad, deeply lobed leaves that form attractive mounds of lush greenery, offering interest even when the plant is not in bloom.
This lupin produces towering spires of pea-like flowers in a wide array of colours—from deep blues and purples to pinks, yellows, and whites—depending on the cultivar or hybrid. These blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
Reaching heights of 90 to 150 cm (3 to 5 feet), Large-leaved Lupins thrive in full sun to partial shade and prefer well-drained, moderately fertile soil. They're excellent for adding height to borders, creating a dramatic backdrop in cottage-style plantings, or standing out in wildflower meadows.
